local exception strange and sinister pop

Performer : Mascara
Chris Mascara (vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, sitar), Ned Smith (drums, backup vocals), Tim Kelly (guitar, dobro, lapsteel, Shavian lute, backup vocals), Nate McBride (electric bass, acoustic bass, backup vocals)

Album Title : Cellar Door

Label : Mascara Records

Where : Somerville, MA

What : Pop, but with a few extras to make it more interesting. This album actually does deserve some attention, mainly due to the fact that it is simply not "easy" to listen to. The lyrics demand attention, with lines such as, "He was droning some fantastic shit, it was the Rolling Stones on methadone." The guitar sounds are convoluted into something much more interesting than simple riffs, and the vocals are half-shouted, half-intoned, rather than sung. The overall effect of the album is sinister and strange, and someone wonders just what type of creeps made this music. But, in the end, it really doesn't matter, because it is fun.

Who it's for : People who still know that talent is required for quality.

When to listen : Anytime you're ready for exhilaration.

Overall Rating : ****
